The State Department counted 50 countries potentially dangerous for the USA

At least 50 countries can currently damage the United States, causing concern to the US administration. This statement was made by Kiron Skinner, director of the Department of Political Planning Department of the Department of Strategic and International Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Skinner clarified that at the end of the 20th century, the main rival of the United States was the USSR: in addition, the PRC had nuclear weapons, but China was not a rival of the United States, since it did not want to get involved in the Cold War. Now China has become the first country to become a rival to the United States not only in the military sphere, but also in the economy.

“Today there are about 50 countries that cause our concern. And we are not only talking about countries that can launch a massive nuclear strike, but they can damage the United States through cyber war, economic war, information confrontation. This is a completely different world,” Skinner emphasized, calling one of the main tests for the United States developing countries that have joined or are capable of joining the ranks of nuclear powers.

Last October, a poll was conducted in which nearly half of the US military said the United States would soon be embroiled in a major war. When asked about specific countries, survey participants stated that they consider Russia and China to be the main potential adversaries. About 71% of military personnel said that Russia poses a significant threat, which is 18 points more than last year. 69% of military personnel declared a threat from China: however, the promised end to the trade war between China and the United States may contribute to the “détente” of relations.

Only 46% of respondents consider North Korea an enemy, compared to 72% in 2017: it is possible that peaceful meetings between the two leaders and the general atmosphere of detente contributed to this. Iraq and Afghanistan were named as enemies by 13% of respondents, Iran by 41%, Syria by 24%, and Saudi Arabia by 18%.

As for the potential list of threats to US security, the military considers cyber-terrorism to be the most significant threat. Almost 89% of respondents indicated it as a significant threat, with more than half of them calling it a serious problem. Many fear that the US is not sufficiently prepared for cyber war. A third of the servicemen said they did not approve the current policy of the country in the fight against cyber-terrorism. In addition, according to the military, domestic terrorism and foreign terrorist organizations, white nationalists and immigration pose a considerable danger.

In 2017, US President Donald Trump repeatedly emphasized the country's preparedness in the face of growing threats from foreign adversaries, both loosely affiliated terrorist groups and traditional competitors. At the same time, senior Pentagon officials spoke publicly about the need to prepare for conflict with a “close enemy.” A similar point of view was expressed by some senior Pentagon officials.

Some military believe that President Trump himself is one of the causes of instability and fear. As one of the servicemen said, some soldiers prefer not to enlist for long service because of fears of conflict, the likelihood of which has increased with the arrival of Trump. According to her, because of doing business with Trump, the United States has become much more opposed, and many military fear a speedy and protracted conflict. On the other hand, some of the military believe that China or Russia hardly want war with the United States.
