In Detroit, a policeman forgot a service dog in a hot car
A K-9 police officer from Detroit is awaiting the selection of a possible disciplinary measure after having forgotten his service dog in a police car in extreme heat. Unfortunately, the animal could not be saved.
City police spokesman Darin Ssilagyi said the officer left his vehicle in the parking lot on June 26 with the engine running and the air conditioning running. There was a dog inside - a German shepherd named Vito. The policeman and his partner left to pick up another car from the parking lot, he writes. USA Today.
When the officer returned after 40 minutes, he discovered that the engine had turned off, and the dog had all the signs of heat stroke. The dog was immediately taken to the veterinary clinic, where he died of heart failure the next day.
The department initiated an investigation - and it has now been completed.
“The investigation revealed that while the vehicle did have technical problems, the officer was also found responsible for the incident,” Ssilagyi said. “Our policy is that you must check your dog every 30 minutes, no matter what.”
According to the police, the emergency warning system for overheating the car broke down. He also said that according to the investigation, the officer knew that his car was shutting down periodically, but he never notified the department to repair the car.
26 June is the peak temperature in Detroit exceeded 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius), according to the National Meteorological Service. All day the sun was shining. In such conditions, the machine can be very hot. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, on an 85-degree day (about 30 Celsius), enough 30 minutes for the temperature inside the machine to reach 120 (almost 50) degrees.
A spokesman for the police department said that the officer had no previous disciplinary history and was shocked by what had happened.
“He’s a very good officer,” Ssilagyi said. “He trained long and hard with this dog and is inconsolable about what happened.”
