American scientists have discovered a new strain of HIV: why it matters

A team of researchers from Abbott Laboratories, University of Missouri, and the Presbyterian Mission Agency discovered a new strain of HIV. The results of the study were published Wednesday in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes.

The detected strain was classified as a subtype L in the HIV-1 group of group M.

There are two main types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. There are several strains in HIV-1. Group M is the strain that led to the global HIV epidemic.

Isolated subtype L virus samples were first detected in DRC in 1983, and then in 1990. The third sample was found in 2001, but could not identify the genome.

“Detecting new viruses like this one is like finding a needle in a haystack. This scientific discovery can help us prevent new pandemics, ”said Mary Rogers, principal scientist at Abbott Laboratories.

Forms of the new strain of HIV virus can circulate both in DNA and elsewhere, but at the moment they are not classified.

Manish Sagar, an assistant professor at Boston University, said this discovery once again proves the existence of various strains of HIV around the world.

Sagar added that existing HIV treatments should be effective in fighting the new strain. “In the absence of any data, there is no reason to suspect that current drugs will not be effective against this strain,” he said.

Recall that previously, scientists from the United States managed to completely remove HIV from the genome of infected laboratory mice using two-stage therapy.
