Second case of cure for HIV recorded
British doctors found no trace of HIV in a patient after bone marrow transplantation and a course of therapy. This is the second time in history, writes RBC.
A man who asked doctors not to disclose his identity became infected with HIV in the 2003 year, and in 2012, he was also diagnosed with a type of blood cancer - Hodgkin's lymphoma. In 2016, for the treatment of cancer, doctors decided to transplant bone marrow stem cells from a donor with a rare genetic mutation CCR5 that is resistant to HIV.
Three years after transplantation and one and a half years later, after the patient stopped taking antiretroviral drugs, tests showed no HIV in the man’s body. However, one of his doctors, a professor, an HIV specialist, Ravindra Gupta, warned that it was too early to talk about a full recovery, it is still a question of remission.
The Guardian notes that, according to most experts, this method of treatment is unthinkable for all patients. The transplant procedure is expensive and risky, and such a mutation is in the “tiny” number of people.
The first person who was cured of HIV was American Timothy Brown. In Germany, he was also transplanted cells with a CCR5 mutation for the treatment of leukemia. Brown became known as the Berlin patient. A man from Britain The Guardian calls the London patient by analogy.
Previously, American scientists using the new procedure managed to save a woman from breast cancer who has passed into the terminal stage. As part of a new therapy, 90 billion of immune cells were pumped into the blood of a woman.
In addition, there are five scientifically valid reasons, as win cancer.
