Uber fined $ 148 million for concealing personal information leaks

Taxi service Uber will pay 148 millions of dollars to 50 US states and the Federal District of Columbia for concealing the fact of personal data leakage of more than 57 millions of customers and driver's license data 600 thousands of taxi drivers working for the company, said Iowa State Prosecutor General Tom Miller.

“As part of a nationwide investigation, Uber has agreed to pay $148 million to all of these states. Iowa will receive $612,95 thousand, which will be sent to the State Consumer Education and Litigation Fund,” says a message on the Attorney General’s website, writes Rambler.

It is noted that Uber during the year hid the leakage of data on 600 thousands of its drivers. The company in November 2016 of the year learned that hackers accessed data, figured out hackers and received assurances that they deleted the information received, including the license numbers of the drivers' cars. In addition, 57 leaked millions of email addresses and phone users around the world. The company reported a leak to the relevant authorities only in November 2017.

In addition to the cash payment, Uber was obliged to formulate a policy to ensure the security of all data and continue to notify customers of a possible leak of company data.
