US President Donald Trump fired National Security Advisor John Bolton after months of disagreement over foreign and national security policies.

Bolton was Trump's third national security adviser and continued the tendency to lay off employees who turned out to be unsuitable for the White House, led by a president who has no experience in the army, national security, or in elected positions, the newspaper notes.

White House deputy spokeswoman Hogan Gridley told reporters that Bolton’s deputy Charles Kupperman will now act as national security adviser. As Bolton’s protégé, Kupperman is unlikely to last a very long time; Trump said he will appoint a new adviser next week.

The dismissal followed events that began with Trump's Twitter announcement that he invited delegations from Afghanistan, including the Taliban, to Camp David for peace talks, but then canceled the meeting.

But Trump became a dove of peace and wanted to reach a peace agreement that would allow most or all of the US military forces to withdraw from Afghanistan, the newspaper notes.

Allies of the president felt that they could not trust Bolton, so that he would not interrupt the process. Bolton could complicate earlier negotiations, insisting on a tougher stance with North Korea. At some point, special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad did not agree to let Bolton take the draft agreement on Afghanistan from the meeting room where they met, The Washington Post reports.
