Trump threatened to send federal troops to Democratic-run US cities

US President Donald Trump on Monday, July 20, said he plans to send federal law enforcement officers to some major US cities to restore order during protests that swept across the country. However, the actions of such forces cause discontent and condemnation on the part of society. Writes about it Reuters.

“We're sending law enforcement to different cities,” Trump told reporters at a White House news conference.

The President mentioned New York (New York), Chicago (Illinois), Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), Detroit (Michigan), Baltimore (Maryland) and Oakland (California) as possible locations for federal forces, noting that the mayors of these cities are "liberal democrats". Chicago Mayor Laurie Lightfoot often criticizes Trump on Twitter.

Meanwhile, state and local leaders in Oregon, as well as members of Congress urged Trump to recall DHS staff from Portland.

“They were there for three days, and they really did a fantastic job in a very short period of time,” Trump said of how law enforcement quelled unruly protests in Portland. “The officers arrest a lot of people, and they are all anarchists.”

Last week, federal troops began suppressing protests in Portland against police brutality and systemic racism, using tear gas and arresting some activists without explanation. Despite a national outcry over the tactic, Department of Homeland Security officials said they would not back down or apologize.
