The President of the United States "changed course" and decided to introduce tariffs on Chinese goods, despite the fact that on May 20 Washington and Beijing reached the first agreement on negotiations to avoid a trade war.

In June, the USA will introduce 25-percent customs duties on goods imported from China totaling $ 50 billion, writes RBC. This decision was made by President Donald Trump, the White House said.

Fees are imposed on products related to “technologies relevant to production, including those related to the program Made in China 2025"(A strategic plan for the modernization of ten industries of China).

The full list of goods that will be subject to duties is not disclosed and will be published on June 15. In the message of the Trump administration, it is nevertheless mentioned that in the USA the tariffs for the import of Chinese cars are 2,5%, and in China for the import of American cars - 25%.

The United States will also continue to dispute with China at the WTO on suspicion of Beijing applying discriminatory technology licensing requirements. In addition, the White House promises to introduce point-based restrictions on investment against individuals and companies from China associated with the "acquisition of industrially significant technologies." Their list will be submitted 30 June.

USA and before announced on the introduction of duties on Chinese goods, but the White House did not mention specific dates. Beijing, in response, also promised restrictions on US imports.

On May 20, the parties issued a statement of consent to take measures to reduce the trade deficit between the United States and China. After that, US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin announced the suspension of a trade war, the same was said by the Vice-Premier of the PRC State Council Liu He.

New York Times calls Trump's decision a "change of course" and explains it with an ideological struggle of "economic nationalists" adhering to protectionist views and more "mainstream advisors" like Mnucin who fear that tariffs and restrictions will damage the market. "It seems that in this round nationalists won, ”the newspaper writes, noting that US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross would still go to Beijing to continue negotiations.

From the very beginning, Washington demanded that China reduce the trade deficit by no less than $ 200 billion and abandon some subsidies under the program Made in China 2025.
