Two months without alcohol: Russians did not like the conditions of vaccination against COVID-19

Russian officials warn citizens to avoid drinking alcohol for two months after being vaccinated against COVID-19, writes New York Post, calling Russia “one of the most drinking countries in the world.”

The warning came from Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova, who said in an interview that the Russians would have to take additional precautions for the 42 days required for the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine to become effective.

“[Russians] will have to refrain from visiting crowded places, wear face masks, use disinfectants, minimize contact and refrain from drinking alcohol or taking immunosuppressants,” Golikova told the TASS news agency.

Anna Popova, head of Rospotrebnadzor, Russia's consumer safety watchdog, echoed those sentiments in an interview with Radio Komsomolskaya Pravda, the Moscow Times reported.

“It’s a strain on the body. If you want to stay healthy and have a strong immune response, don't drink alcohol,” she said.

According to the World Health Organization, Russia has the fourth largest alcohol consumption per capita in the world. According to the agency, the average Russian consumes 15,1 liters of alcohol a year.

Russia's efforts to vaccinate the population began over the weekend in Moscow. The country's health authorities estimate that 100 people have already been vaccinated.

“By the end of the week, all regions of the country will join this campaign,” Golikova said.

Russian health officials say the Sputnik V vaccine is more than 90 percent effective, but reports say that healthcare workers who were vaccinated contracted COVID-19. It is reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin refused to get vaccinated.

Western experts have expressed skepticism about the speed of development of the proposed vaccine, and Russia has not provided any data to support its claims of the vaccine.

In Russia, 2,4 million cases of coronavirus have been registered, as well as more than 42 thousand deaths from this disease.
