The fight against COVID-19: what is more effective - vaccination or natural immunity
With the advent of the vaccine, many questions have arisen. Scientists are finding out what will be more effective in helping to build immunity - getting coronavirus or getting vaccinated? Edition Health News talked about the advantages and disadvantages of vaccination, and also found out whether you need to get vaccinated against COVID-19 if you have already been ill.
There is no single answer
The main problem is that it is impossible to predict the consequences of coronavirus infection. Jennifer Gommerman, an immunologist at the University of Toronto, said the main benefits of the vaccine are predictability and safety.
The vaccine confers immunity against COVID-19 and is considered safer than being infected with the virus. And if we take into account data on other infections, such as pneumococcal bacteria, the vaccine provides immunity more effectively than infection.
There is a chance that the COVID-19 vaccine will work the same way. When testing a vaccine from the Moderna company, more antibodies were found in the blood of volunteers than people who had had COVID-19.
What is known about natural immunity to COVID-19
But this does not mean that natural immunity is weak, it is also quite strong. According to the latest data from researchers, those who have had COVID-19 have immunity for at least 6 months.

But, there are also cases when in people with a mild course of the disease, the antibodies produced disappeared within a few months and they could be re-infected. The different immune response from natural infection may be related to the concentration of the virus that has entered the person.
Why vaccination is still the best option:
- when vaccinated, everyone receives the same dose;
- people who are obese or diabetic are especially susceptible to severe COVID-19, the vaccine will protect them from this;
- people who have loved ones who are susceptible to a severe course of the disease will not endanger them;
- almost one in three people who recovered from COVID-19 feel exhaustion and tachycardia for several months thereafter.
Should you get vaccinated if you have already had COVID-19?
Experts believe that vaccination in the event of recovery from COVID-19 is safe and probably even beneficial.

This is a kind of strengthening of immunity. You can get even better immunity by boosting the immunity you had with the vaccine after you recovered.
But, you can wait a bit before getting vaccinated. Research has shown that the immune response persists for the first few months after infection, but everyone who has had COVID-19 has a different level of protection.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Immunization Practices Advisory Committee said people who have not been infected should take priority over those who have had COVID-19 in the past 90 days.
