Russia may limit foreign social networks

Russia's response to the recognition of the channel Russia Today In the US, a foreign agent may include restrictions targeting social media. This statement was made by the head of the United Russia faction Sergei Neverov.

“We will not only work on the proposals, but also the commission that will be created will work on further, broader mechanisms, which may include social networks,” he said.

In the law on foreign agents it will be possible to enter not only foreign media, but also foreign social networks, transmits newspaper "Vedomosti" statement Neverova. And according to State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, the State Duma will pass a law restricting the work of the American media next week in three readings.

Recall that on November 9, the US Department of Justice requested RT to register as a foreign agent before November 13. Channel editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan called the demands discriminatory: the channel will challenge him in court. However, RT will register, because otherwise they can arrest the company's accounts. On the development of response measures 9 November told the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova.

In Russia, the law on foreign agents has been in effect since 2012, which obliges all non-profit organizations that accept funds from abroad and are engaged in politics to register with the Ministry of Justice. After registration, NPOs should publish regular reporting. The US Foreign Agents Act is aimed at foreign lobbying organizations, but several media outlets are registered.
