Older Americans recommended to get additional COVID-19 vaccine this spring
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending that older Americans get another COVID-19 vaccine this spring, reports Reuters.
CDC Director Mandy Cohen on Feb. 28 approved the use of updated COVID-19 vaccines as the second annual shot for older Americans age 65 and older.
The Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted 11 to 1 for older Americans to get another shot this spring. Last year, the committee recommended an optional additional dose for this age group.

“Last year, the majority of deaths and hospitalizations due to COVID-19 occurred in those 65+. An additional dose of vaccine will provide protection to this group of people,” Cohen said.
According to the CDC, adults aged 65+ are most affected by COVID-19. Of those hospitalized between October and December 2023, more than half were from this age group.
