The trade war with China: a list of stores in the US, where goods are more expensive

Such a warning was made by many popular retailers in the US, writes Time.

This week, the Trump administration imposed a 10% duty on imported 200 billion worth goods from China. If during the negotiations between the two countries it is not possible to reach a compromise, the duties may increase to 25% at the beginning of 2019.

US President Donald Trump said that the duties are necessary in order to force China to stop its unfair trade policy, which is detrimental to American enterprises. At the same time, many US retailers said that the new tariffs will affect the costs of their companies, and these losses will be partially shifted to consumers by raising prices.

The new tariffs will affect imported goods ranging from canned vegetables to wood furnishings, and will also affect the value of some major consumer brands such as Crocs, Nike, Apple and Procter & Gamble.

According to experts, price increases will start from 2019, since retailers have already made purchases for the holiday season, and this was before the introduction of fees.

Walmart

While a new round of tariffs was under consideration, the public was invited to comment on this idea.

One of the letters sent to the office of the US Trade Representative was a letter from Walmart. It said: "The direct effect of duties will be to raise prices for consumers and tax American businesses and producers."

In the same letter, the representative of the trading network offered a preliminary list of goods that would rise in price due to duties. It includes fish, vegetables, nuts, fruits, grains, flour; the drinks; personal care products; detergents; cars, motorcycles and bicycles; travel goods, handbags and luggage; leather clothes; paper and stationery; hats; instruments; furniture; lighting and mirrors, including Christmas lights; monitors; paper tablecloths, napkins, plates and cups, toilet paper and napkins, dog leashes, air conditioners, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, calculators, children's products and much more.

Walmart argued that the expected level of growth in prices for cosmetics, electronics and baby products is particularly alarming.

“The increased costs associated with the new tariffs may lead families to choose cheaper but less secure options to offset the new financial burden,” the letter said.

Office Depot

В Office Depot said tariffs on Chinese goods would cause "significant disruption" to the company's supply chain - particularly for office furniture. Even if many Office Depot products are not affected by the tariffs, price increases in one product category could impact the store's overall sales.

Macy's

CEO Jeff Gennett of this network said that his company would try to cope with the costs associated with new tariffs on Chinese goods, but in some cases this burden would fall partially on consumers, and the prices of some products would have to be increased.

Target

“We are concerned about the tariffs because they will raise prices on everyday products for American families,” Target CEO Brian Cornell said in August. At the same time, the network did not specify which specific products we were talking about.

Gap

In the management of Gap is the eponymous brand of the company, as well as Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta. The retailer stated that many items of clothing that he sells will rise in price due to import duties from China. Prices for sweaters will increase, because most of the material for their manufacture comes from China.

The Honest Company

This company specializing in diapers, napkins and other children's products, in a letter to the administration of the Trump said that it is still “not yet profitable, start-up company”, and therefore retailers “will not be able to effectively incur costs due to additional fees” , in connection with which the company "will be forced to raise prices."

Fossil group

Fossil Group includes the famous fashion brands Diesel, Puma, Marc Jacobs, Chaps and DKNY. According to the company, the new duties on Chinese goods will force it to raise prices for such goods as smart watches and handbags.

Michael's

The company's products in the amount ofKolo 400 million dollars will be under attack because of fees. Therefore, in Michael's warned that consumers are waiting for price increases for many of their products.

Jo-ann

The company said that it produces goods in the United States, but buys raw materials in China, so duties can affect prices and its products. Jo-Ann added that for this reason, even those manufacturers who manufacture their products in the United States may suffer.

American sale

Chicago-based American Sale, which specializes in swimming pools and furniture, said it buys Chinese goods from intermediaries, and they have already announced their intention to raise prices, so the company has no other options than to increase the cost of goods sold in its stores.
