Poroshenko called on all countries to unite against Russia

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called on “all peoples of the free world” to stand together against the “Russian aggressor.” He stated this in a speech in Kyiv on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

“The Russian Federation, having cynically trampled upon international law, annexed Crimea and incited an armed conflict in the Donbass, today again destroys the system of European and world security,” Poroshenko said.

“Today, as we mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and pay tribute to the tens of millions who died, we call on all peoples of the free world to stand united and resolutely against the Russian aggressor, who has launched an undeclared hybrid war against sovereign Ukraine.”

The Ukrainian president noted that the support of Ukraine by the overwhelming majority of world and European leaders, the help that Ukraine constantly feels in these difficult times, indicate that the international community realizes the futility of the policy of “appeasing the aggressor.”

“The democratic world must make every effort to restore the destroyed system of international order and restore confidence in international law,” he stressed.

Russia categorically denies its participation in the conflict in eastern Ukraine, saying that only volunteers are fighting on the side of the self-proclaimed “people's republics” in Donbass.

The relevance of “bloody lessons”

“The bloody lessons of World War II should not be in vain. The aggressor can only be stopped through joint efforts, as it was 70 years ago,” says Petro Poroshenko.

He also noted the role of Ukrainians in the victory over German fascism: “Ukrainians bravely fought the enemy in the ranks of the Red Army, Soviet partisans and underground fighters, regular troops of the anti-Hitler coalition states, in the French, Slovak and other resistance movements. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian patriots fought in the ranks of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.”

The Second World War, according to various estimates, cost Ukraine between eight and ten million lives.

Poroshenko recalled that the recognition of the significant contribution of Ukrainians to the victory over Nazism was to give Ukraine the right to become a founding member of the United Nations.

World War II ended on September 2 on 1945, when Japan’s unconditional surrender was signed. The largest celebrations on this occasion will be held in Beijing, where a grand military parade will be held, at which, among other guests, will be Russian President Vladimir Putin.
