Now the politician is visiting the United States and will not be able to return to Ukraine.

“The President of Ukraine issued a decree on deprivation of citizenship,” the department said in a statement. Saakashvili was deprived of citizenship for “consciously providing false information or false documents.”

Saakashvili took post of head of the Odessa regional administration in March 2015. Meanwhile, Serhiy Leshchenko, a Ukrainian politician, wrote on his page in Facebook, that “thus, Saakashvili will not even physically be able to return to Ukraine - he will be detained in Boryspil upon arrival and extradited to Georgia on the first flight. Thus, it will be impossible to physically protect him from extradition. In fact, Saakashvili is being forced to take refuge in America and forget about Ukrainian politics. Do not look for Poroshenko’s decree on depriving Saakashvili of citizenship on the president’s website - it cannot be published because it contains personal information about the person. All this was done specifically in the summer, while citizen activity is extremely low. Yanukovych isolated his competitors in prisons, Poroshenko isolated them abroad.”

Meanwhile, political scientist and director of the sociological service “Ukrainian Barometer” Viktor Nebozhenko told the publication Gordon, that “the United States will have an extremely negative attitude towards depriving Saakashvili of Ukrainian citizenship. This is a dangerous game for Poroshenko. And this is not just a resolution of the personal conflict between Poroshenko and Saakashvili - the consequences will be much more serious. Considering that Poroshenko really wants to be re-elected for a second term, he clearly doesn’t need Saakashvili here.”

At the same time, he added the following: “Poroshenko no longer needed Saakashvili, which is why he deprived him of citizenship. It was no coincidence that the head of state went to Georgia - there he tested the waters on how Tbilisi would react to Saakashvili’s possible deportation. Big trouble awaits him there. This will be a big problem for both Ukraine and Georgia. Saakashvili is a pro-American politician. His possible deportation would be a very bold step. After all, it will lead to serious consequences. Where are the guarantees that Saakashvili, deprived of his Ukrainian passport, will not end up in the clutches of the FSB? And this threat is quite real.”
