The first victims of Alberto were journalists
Official reports of the dead or injured directly due to the subtropical cyclone Alberto have been reported. However, in North Carolina, TV presenter and photojournalist were killed when a tree fell on their car. At that moment, they were preparing a report on inclement weather on the outskirts of the cyclone.
A North Carolina traffic police patrol reported that a large tree fell on a car owned by a broadcaster near Trion, North Carolina on Monday.
WYFF-TV from Greenville, South Carolina reported that one of its hosts, Mike McCormick, and photojournalist Aaron Schmelzer were killed. The men drove along the 176 highway near Trion, west of Charlotte, when a large tree with a diameter of 3 feet fell on their car.
Shortly before, McCormick and Schmelzer interviewed Trionyon Fire Chief Jeffrey Tennant for a report on peripheral storms in North Carolina, hundreds of kilometers from Alberto center.
When rescuers found pinned cars with men, the engine still worked and the gear was turned on. The passengers died instantly.
Tennant does not believe that the death of journalists is directly related to Alberto, because the tree became unstable because of the water-saturated soil after the rains, which lasted a week.
Recall that meteorologists lowered the level of the storm Alberto before the subtropical depression (areas of low atmospheric pressure), but warned that the threat of flooding persists because the cyclone still carries heavy rains.
According to weather forecasters, the center of the low-pressure area moves northward at a speed of about 19 kilometers per hour.
The Atlantic hurricane season usually lasts from June 1 to the end of November.
Experts expect that this year the region will collapse from 10 to 16 "nominal" storms, 9 of which will increase to hurricanes. In particular, you can expect up to four strong hurricanes.
