When the owners of a home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, opened their front door after being away for several days, they smelled spoiled food. The incident report states that dirty dishes were in the sink and empty beer bottles were in the trash can. The spouses were alarmed.

Then they heard a noise coming from the back of the house. When the husband, as he later told investigators, opened the bedroom door, he found a tall young man in the room. Next to him was a duffel bag and an assault weapon. The man did not threaten the couple and did not steal anything.

"He was very embarrassed and apologetic about the situation," a man at the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office said.

The stranger immediately went to the front door and placed $200 on a chair in the living room. According to him, it was compensation for the window that he broke to get into the house. Then the uninvited guest ran away.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office has not yet identified or located the unusual robber. The money was sent to a crime lab for analysis. If found, the man could be charged with aggravated burglary and criminal damage to property, the report said.

The homeowners described him as being about 6 feet (1,8 m) tall with brown hair; He looks to be between 20 and 30 years old. He was wearing jeans, a gray Carhartt jacket and a hat. This man did not appear to be mentally ill. When the owner asked the robber why he was there, he said that "his family was killed in East Texas" and he was running from someone.

The owner of the house explained to investigators that the alleged burglar could have hitchhiked to town as his car broke down about 100 miles (160 km) from the house. The man broke a window in the homeowners building with a metal tool, investigators said. Then he cooked food, slept in one of the bedrooms, bathed in the main bathroom. The officers noted in the report that none of the couple's belongings were stolen.

“The jewelry that the wife left near the sink was not touched,” the report says.

Other than the kitchen, according to the report, the only part of the house that was in disarray was the bed, which was probably where the man slept. Pillows were scattered on it and on the floor of the "disorderly" one. In addition, the police found a towel left on the couch.

The report says the man left little evidence in the house. There was no blood around the broken window, no hair on the bed, no marks on tools or beer bottles.

Footprints were found in the snow. Law enforcement officers searched the area, but could not find anyone who matched the description of the wanted man. A similar incident occurred the day before, January 29, the report said. A van was broken into in the area.

Although the intruder left the homeowners $200 to fix the window, investigators estimate that the man still owes the owners $15–$10 for beer and $5 for shrimp.
