Panama Dossier: US launches criminal investigation
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York has launched an investigation into a journalistic publication based on the so-called Panama Papers.
The Guardian newspaper that participated in this investigation published on its website a copy of a letter received by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists from the American Prosecutor's Office.
It states that a criminal case has been opened on the basis of journalistic materials related to the Panama Papers. At the same time, the letter does not specify what kind of suspicions and to whom exactly these publications aroused.
An international consortium of investigative journalists was studying the 11 of millions of documents from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca, which an unknown informant gave to the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung.
Results of the investigation were published at the same time several major world media.
The publications mentioned offshore companies registered through Mossack Fonseca to many world leaders and their surroundings. A total of 72 heads of various states were mentioned there.
In the Panama Papers found information about the possible connection of the Kremlin with the team of Hillary Clinton, which is going to fight for the presidency of the United States.
