Americans consider immigration one of the main problems of the United States

New poll Gallup showed that Americans have become more concerned about immigration and terrorism over the past year. Inflation is also on the list of the 14 most important problems in the United States.

At the same time, as the inflation rate has decreased compared to 2023, public concern about this issue has decreased. However, many Americans still say they worry about inflation more than any of the 13 other issues included in the new survey.

For the second month in a row, immigration led Americans' spontaneous responses to what worries the nation most, with inflation also featuring prominently.

Gallup asks Americans to rate their concerns about various national issues in its poll every March.

More than half of Americans are “very” concerned about inflation. Immigration, drugs, pensions and terrorism concern at least 40% of Americans. Race relations and unemployment were the least of the concerns, with about a third of those surveyed feeling very concerned about each of these issues.

Immigration is America's top concern.

The Gallup Institute monthly monitors Americans' views on national issues.

He asks Americans, without prompting, to name what they believe is the country's most important issue today. This question is asked first before the full survey. Based on the answers to this question, we can draw a different conclusion from the rating of problems: concerns about immigration are ahead of worries about inflation.

Overall, 28% of Americans cite immigration as a top issue. Mentions of government and poor leadership combined come in second at 19%, with the overall economy in third at 14%, followed by inflation at 11%.

Homelessness (6%) and crime (3%) are further down the list of most frequently mentioned issues.

Immigration and terrorism top polls

Over the past year, Americans have become less concerned about two economic issues: the economy in general (down eight points) and inflation in particular (down six points).

Both declines likely reflect the nearly halving of inflation over this period.

Meanwhile, public concern about illegal immigration and the possibility of future terrorist attacks in the United States has grown.

Concern about illegal immigration increased by seven percentage points, from 41% in March 2023 to 48% today. Concern about future terrorist attacks also rose seven points since last year, from 36% to 43%.
