An unclaimed $ 1,5 billion jackpot could create a hole in South Carolina’s budget

The lucky man from South Carolina, who won the 1,537 billion dollar jackpot, has not yet declared his right to win.

This means that the state of South Carolina could be a big loser, writes The New York Post.

Representatives of economic departments have calculated that the winner will pay a million dollars in income tax from the 61 winnings, which will go to the state budget. This money would be enough to cover the cost of South Carolina for new cars for voting or to pay for police services in every state school. And the region was counting on this money.

But given the fact that the prize remains unclaimed, the South Carolina Economic Affairs Board proposed to exclude the planned amount of 61 million dollars from the state spending plan. This is more than 0,5% of the total budget of South Carolina, constituting 9 billion dollars.

The lottery winner has the right to claim his winnings until mid-April. After the expiration of this period, 1,5 billion dollar jackpot will be divided between 44 states that hold the Mega Millions lottery and contribute to the formation of financial prizes of this lottery.
