Unknown opened fire at school in Colorado: 8 children were injured

At least eight students were injured as a result of a school shooting in a suburb of Denver, Colorado, on May 7, at about two in the afternoon. Police said two suspects were arrested.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said police responded to reports of shots fired at the suburban STEM School Highlands at 13:53 p.m. Buzz Feed News.

Local hospitals confirmed they were treating eight victims. According to preliminary information, all of them are students of the school. Four people remain in serious condition, three in stable condition and one in fair condition, medical officials said.

Deputy county sheriff Holly Nicholson-Klute said that two suspects had been taken into custody. She added that at the moment police officers, including special forces, are in the school building and continue to work.

“Multiple shots were fired, and police officers, sheriff's officers arrived on the scene almost immediately,” Nicholson-Kluth told reporters during a briefing, adding that when officers arrived at the school, they still heard gunshots.

Now the school is closed, all educational institutions around have temporarily suspended their work, extracurricular activities have been canceled.

Nicholson Klut said the shooting started in high school. According to her, it is unclear whether the suspects were students of this institution, but the police speak of them as minors.

Christian, a sixth grade student, said that he was in the school hall when he saw a group of children who were running and shouting: “School shooter, school shooter!”.

The boy did not immediately realize that this was not a joke. Fortunately, he quickly responded and ran along with the other children, which helped him to safely get out of the building.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis said he was monitoring the situation and ensuring the availability of all public safety resources to help the sheriff’s office.
