Lithuania considers provocation to check the legality of its exit from the USSR
On Tuesday, high-ranking Lithuanian officials called provocation the decision of the Russian prosecutor’s office to investigate the legality of the recognition of the independence of the Baltic countries.
“Our independence was won with the blood of the people of Lithuania. And no one can encroach on her. Only we ourselves decide our fate,” said President Dalia Grybauskaite. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius said that the investigation by Russian prosecutors into the legality of the Soviet Union's recognition of the independence of the Baltic countries "is at least assessed as a provocation."
“In essence, this is a legal, moral and political absurdity. Unfortunately, this is not the first action of this nature in recent times. How deeply they will get bogged down in this absurd situation will depend on Russia itself, but I expect political comments from the Russian side in the near future. I hope that the path to this senseless action will be blocked,” the minister told BNS. On Tuesday, the Russian news agency Interfax reported that the Russian Prosecutor General's Office has begun checking the recognition of the independence of the Baltic countries.
