She tells Diana that once upon a time the god Zeus created mankind, but his son Ares, the god of war, placed darkness inside people and turned them against each other. He then killed the rest of the gods, including his father. But before his death, Zeus left the Amazons the sword "Slayer of the Gods" so that when the time comes, they could destroy the traitor Ares. The mother tells Diana the story of her origin. Hippolyta told her daughter that she molded her out of clay, and "Zeus breathed life into her." She once again reminds Diana that she does not wish her the fate of a warrior. She agrees, but, nevertheless, at night Hippolyta's sister, General Antiope, secretly teaches Diana all the fighting skills of the Amazons. When the deception is revealed, an angry Hippolyta takes her sister's word that she will train Diana harder than the rest of the Amazons, for Ares has not disappeared forever and will return someday.
