Kim Jong-un was the first North Korean leader to cross the military demarcation line and enter South Korea’s Phanmunjom border crossing point.
Kim Jong-un called meeting with Moon Jae-In the beginning of a new history, writes Air force.
Before the start of the summit, the leaders of the two Koreas exchanged a long (almost 30 seconds) handshake.
At that moment, both leaders were each on their own side of the border, a brief dialogue took place between them, after which Moon Jae Ying took a step to the North Korean side of the border at the invitation of Kim Jong Un. This moment, apparently, was not a predetermined part of the ceremony.
After that, the leaders of the DPRK and South Korea returned to South Korea and, accompanied by a guard of honor, went to the Peace House in the demilitarized zone, where the historic summit will be held. All this time the leaders held hands.
Before the talks began, Kim Jong-un said he hoped for a frank conversation. The most important topics of the North-South summit are nuclear disarmament and peace on the peninsula.
Historic meeting
“Today begins a new period of history - the beginning of the history and era of peace,” Kim wrote in the guest book.
The first meeting of the delegations has already ended, the presidents will have lunch alone. Kim, in a black limousine under security, returned to his country. Later in the evening he will return to South Korea to continue negotiations.
The meeting of Kim Jong Un and Moon Jae Ying was the culmination of the process of gradual warming of relations between Seoul and Pyongyang, which began several months ago. It is assumed that it will prepare the ground for the upcoming talks between the United States and the DPRK.
“The Korean War is over!...After unimaginable missile launches and nuclear tests, a historic meeting is taking place between the leaders of North and South Korea. This is great, but only time will tell how effective it will be!” Trump tweeted.
However, many analysts remain skeptical about the sincerity of recent statements by the North to renounce nuclear weapons.
Pyongyang last week объявил on the termination of nuclear tests and launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles, as well as the closure of a nuclear test site in the north of the country.
Kim Jong-un said that by the DPRK, it is no longer necessary to conduct such tests, since the country has completed the creation of nuclear weapons.
The tests are being frozen "in order to ensure economic growth and peace on the Korean Peninsula."
At the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Pyeongchang, the national teams of South Korea and the DPRK marched as one team with a flag depicting a “unified” Korean Peninsula on a white background.
In March, US President Donald Trump unexpectedly announced that he accepted Pyongyang’s offer of direct negotiations. Prior to this, no current US president had met with North Korean leaders.
