Pocket tutor: Google will conduct mini-English lessons directly in the search engine

Google is launching a new English learning feature that helps people practice speaking and improve their skills. However, in the near future it will appear only in a few countries, reports SkillBox.

The update will appear directly in Google search in the coming days, reports press service of the company. For now, the new feature will only be available to Android users in Argentina, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Mexico and Venezuela. But the developers expect it to spread more widely in the future.

Now language learners will translate to or from English on their Android phones and gain a new experience of speaking English with personalized feedback.

The idea is simple: the user will be offered microlearning exactly at the moment when he needed to know the translation of a word. Now, when users from the above countries translate words into English or from English into other languages ​​in searches, Google will offer them practice.

The program simulates a dialogue using the word entered by the user in the replica. And he, in turn, must answer the virtual interlocutor, uttering a phrase with the same word. After this, you receive feedback - whether his response is correct from a grammatical point of view, whether the interlocutor will be able to understand him, and what alternative answers are possible. In addition, the program provides individual examples of using the search word. Such classes last only 3–5 minutes. In addition, the user can sign up for daily notifications reminding them to exercise.

In addition, during class you can click on any word in the dialogue that you do not understand. The program will show contextual translation. This means that the user will see the meaning of the word that is appropriate in this particular case (the fact is that some words can be translated differently depending on the context).

It is noted that to launch the new function, Google specially developed several new neural networks.

The key technology enabling this functionality is a new deep learning model developed in collaboration with the Google Translate team called Deep Aligner. This model is also included in the Google Translation APIs, which significantly improves, for example, the formatting of translated PDFs and websites in Chrome, the translation of YouTube captions, and improvements to the Google Cloud Translation API.
