An Azerbaijani was arrested in Portugal: due to an incorrect translation, he was suspected of terrorism

A 36-year-old Russian-speaking Azerbaijani confused the words “pomegranate” and “pomegranate” while trying to order fruit juice in Portuguese at a restaurant in Lisbon. Because of this oversight, he ended up in handcuffs, reports Independent.

A tourist wrote a note trying to order a drink, but his language app returned the wrong translation. The waiter saw the note and decided that the man was threatening with a grenade. As a result, the waiter called the police and the Azerbaijani was arrested.

He was ordered to lie face down on the ground before five officers approached him and handcuffed him.

The unnamed tourist was reportedly taken to a nearby police station for questioning. He was released after it was discovered that he did not have any weapons on him. His hotel room was also searched. Officers also inspected the restaurant.

Police and anti-terrorism units are currently on high alert throughout Portugal. In early October, the government raised the terrorist threat from "moderate" to "severe." The move follows terrorist incidents in Belgium and France following conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The incident is caused by the similarity of the two words “pomegranate” and “grenade” in Russian. However, in Portuguese they are completely different words: "roma" means pomegranate, and "granada" means pomegranate. If you enter the singular word “pomegranate” into the translator, there will be no problems.

But if it’s plural, you may end up in handcuffs.

But in the plural, the translator automatically suggests the word for not for fruit, but for weapon.
