How one school became the safest in America

Cameras with live broadcasts in the office at the sheriff of the district, teachers who wear panic buttons, and smoke installations in the corridor. All of this equipment is located at Southwestern High School in Shelbyville, Indiana, which has been called "the safest school in America."

The system was installed in 2015 after the Indiana Sheriff Association chose a school district for the first of its kind security program, writes USA Today.

“I think what happened in Newtown, Sandy Hook, really made people realize, made all of us realize that this could happen to us,” said Paula Maurer, superintendent of the county's Unified Schools. “It’s time to do something, we have the answers.” We have the technology. We have ways to keep our children safe, and we must do it.”

The school and law enforcement agencies show the ability of the system in real time to communicate with the police and track the suspect in the school. Here is how the security program works:

• In the case of active shooting, the teacher can click on his alarm button, which causes a school alarm and notifies the local law enforcement agencies. Students have the opportunity to barricade themselves against a potential shooter. Watching him through the window of the locked bullet-proof door.
• Another device, found in every classroom, allows teachers to tell law enforcement that their class is safe or, conversely, to signal that they need medical attention.
• Thanks to cameras in the corridors, the county sheriff can see the shooter's movements and, if necessary, activate what they call "hot zones." Controllers can activate smoke installations to distract and limit the visibility of the suspect in the corridors.

The system, called "Safe School Flagship" and "Best Practical Solution" from the Indiana Sheriffs Association, was created with the prospect of becoming a new standard in school safety throughout the country.

In a statement released after the system was installed, the executive director of the Sheriffs Association, Steve Luce, called it "a paradigm shift in public safety."

“Your children deserve to be safe, and you as parents deserve to have your children come home to you safely after school, and teachers deserve to remain teachers, not bodyguards,” Luce said in a statement.

The entire security system installed at the school in 2015 was worth $ 400 thousands. Net talon, a security company in Virginia, funded most of the plant, and the rest was funded by grants.
