The Immigration Service has updated the form for companies that want to hire foreigners

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced on July 21 a new version of Form I-9 Proof of Employment Eligibility. Employers in the United States use this form to verify the identity and work authorization of their employees. Everything you need to know about the changes, told the publication Boundless.

"The recently updated Form I-9 contains many amendments to the form and its instructions," the agency said in a statement.

Here are the major changes to Form I-9:

• Shorter sections: reduced sections 1 and 2 to fit on one single-sided sheet. “Several fields have been merged into fewer when possible,” USCIS explains.
• Compiler or Translator Certification (Appendix A): Appendix A is now a standalone application that employers can easily give employees to complete and return.

• Revalidation and Rehiring (Appendix B): Addendum B, which is used to verify that an employee still has a valid work permit, has also been moved to a separate standalone document.
• Terminology changes: the term alien authorized to work in section 1 has been replaced by the term noncitizen authorized to work. In addition, the distinction between noncitizen national and noncitizen authorized to work has been clarified.
• Improved usability: The updated form is designed to be compatible with tablets and mobile devices, making it easier for employers and employees to complete electronically.
• Simplified instructions: instructions reduced from 15 to 8 pages.
• Measures to combat discrimination: The notice at the top of Form I-9 has been updated to provide employers with clearer guidance on non-discrimination during the review process.
• Alternative Document Verification: The new Form I-9 contains a checkbox that employers can use to indicate when they reviewed an employee's records using an alternative procedure approved by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) instead of the traditional in-person review.

When will the new version go live

Employers can begin using the updated Form I-9 (Rev. 01.08.23/1/2023) on August 21.10.19, 31. However, they can continue to use the previous version (rev. 2023/XNUMX/XNUMX) until October XNUMX, XNUMX. After this date, this version becomes obsolete.
