Elon Musk was suspected of creating a threat to US national security: all because of tweets beneficial to Putin

Officials in the administration of US President Joe Biden are debating whether US authorities should subject some of Elon Musk's businesses to national security threats, including the Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) deal and SpaceX's Starlink satellite network. The head of SpaceX recently made a series of Twitter threads to announce proposals to end Russia's war in Ukraine, and also stated that SpaceX cannot fund its Starlink internet service in Ukraine indefinitely. He later changed his mind and said he would continue to pay for the maintenance costs.

Bloomberg sources said U.S. officials were uneasy about Musk's recent threat to cut off Starlink satellite communications to Ukraine and the businessman's "increasingly Russia-friendly stance following a series of tweets outlining peace proposals beneficial to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Discussions about inspecting Musk's businesses are at an early stage, and U.S. government officials are weighing what tools, if any, would allow the federal government to inspect Musk's businesses, sources told Bloomberg.

One possibility is through legislation regulating the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), which is administered by the US Department of the Treasury.

One element of Musk's $44 billion Twitter deal that could trigger a CFIUS review, according to Bloomberg, is the presence of foreign investors.

The group includes Saudi Arabian investor Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal and Shanghai-based Binance.

A US Treasury Department spokesman said CFIUS does not publicly comment on transactions that it may be reviewing.

Musk said he would back out of a deal to buy Twitter in May, alleging that the company was underreporting the number of bot and spam accounts on the social media platform, setting off a series of lawsuits between the two parties.

But in October, Musk reversed course and said he would continue the deal on the original terms.
