Dozens of migrants are injured falling from a 9-meter border wall: a lot of people risk their health every day to get into the United States

Last week, about two dozen illegal immigrants sought medical help after attempting to climb a 9-meter wall on the US-Mexico border, reports Newsweek.

Last weekend alone, 16 migrants received treatment after falling from the wall. Last week, a total of 26 migrants were treated after they climbed the border wall and were injured falling from it.

Last Saturday, San Diego Fire Rescue crews responded to help ten migrants who needed treatment after falling from a wall. Among them were families with small children.

"This is an inhumane process"

Number migrantsarrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border surged in 2023 and reached record levels at the end of the year. The US Border Patrol reported nearly 250 encounters in December 000. In January, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported total migrant encounters on the southwest border at 2023.

San Diego County Executive Jim Desmon said the surge in migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border requires reform of the current system. The current one, he said, cannot properly cope with the number of arrivals.

“This is an inhumane process, it is inhumane,” he said on March 10. “People should be able to immigrate to this country with dignity, come with pride, with their heads held high, and not look for holes in the fence or climb over the wall.”

Migrants, who illegally crossed the US-Mexico border wall are processed by CBP and then given a court date to file their claim for asylum.

Joseph Ciacci, a neurosurgeon at the University of California, San Diego, said injury cases increased fivefold under the Trump administration when the border wall became taller. Officials have begun replacing areas with fences less than 5 meters high with fences 6 meters high.

In 2019, UC San Diego Health treated at least 60 patients who fell from border walls. Two years later, the number had grown to almost 450.

The Mexican consulate reported that in 2023, 29 Mexican citizens died from falls while trying to enter the San Diego region, and another 120 were injured.
