Jews fought in a special way: to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust

Today, January 27, in Israel, as well as all over the world, is celebrating the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

On this day 73 a year ago, 27 January 1945, the Red Army troops under the command of Marshal Konev liberated the prisoners of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz.

The fate of all the peoples of conquered Europe was terrible, but the Catastrophe of the Jews, including those living in the Nazi-occupied territory of the Soviet Union, is incomparable with their fate: 6 million Jews were brutally massacred by Hitler's Germany.

The territory of Moldova was fully occupied by the Nazis in August 1941. The occupation turned out to be more than 250 thousands of Jews. Almost all of them died.

Historians say that Moldova was the first Soviet republic where the Nazis "finally solved the Jewish question."

The history of Moldavia during the Second World War I know not from textbooks, but from the stories of my father Lev Lieberman (blessed by his memory!). Father was mobilized into the Red Army on July 5 1941. In his book of memoirs, "Orhei's story", he says that he ended up in the same part with his elder brother Welvl and other Jewish guys from numerous towns in Bessarabia.

“Unexpectedly, an order was announced to us,” writes my father, “to demobilize all Bessarabians and send them to the rear. We were dejected. A group of Jewish guys got a reception from the military commissar: “We are Jews, we want to fight the fascist enemy!”, we said. We were lucky - they left us, and we were happy.”

More than five hundred thousand Jewish soldiers fought in the ranks of the Red Army with Nazi Germany and its allies. And just in the armies of the countries of the anti-Hitler coalition fought at least one and a half million Jews. Hundreds of thousands of Jews died on the fronts of World War II.

People of different nationalities fought heroically against fascism, but the Jews fought somehow in a special way. They fought not only for themselves, for their loved ones, but also for the right to live in this world. The right they were denied by the Nazis.

One of the main mottos of the State of Israel created in 1948 was the words “Never again". Never again will we allow a repetition of the Holocaust!

Today this motto is still relevant. Because even today there are those who cherish plans for the "final solution of the Jewish question."

But today we have our own state. Our army is one of the most powerful armies in the world. We will never allow a repeat of the Holocaust!
