'The only guarantee of security': well-known Polish figures called for immediate admission of Ukraine to NATO and the EU

More than a hundred well-known figures in Poland and two public organizations called for solidarity with Ukraine and opposed Russia's aggression. Writes about it ZBRUC.

They called for the expansion of NATO's European security zones to Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia as soon as possible. And to prevent Russia from wreaking havoc in Europe.

The initiators spoke about the possible consequences of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, while they concerned not only Ukraine directly, but also the EU countries. Polish leaders noted that membership in NATO and the EU is currently the only guarantee of security for Ukraine.

Full text of the call for solidarity with Ukraine and the prevention of Russian aggression

In 2014, Russia launched a hybrid war with Ukraine by occupying Ukrainian Crimea and fueling military fire in Donbas. This war has already claimed more than fourteen thousand victims and driven one and a half million people out of their homes, destabilizing the Ukrainian state.

This was Putin's response to the Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity, to the disagreement of the millions of Ukrainians who took to the streets of their cities, fighting for the right to self-determination, democracy and European values. In the concept of Russian leaders there is room only for enslaved, humiliated and submissive people. Therefore, Russia has trampled on international treaties and its own obligations, and is now blackmailing Ukraine and the world by threatening another invasion and occupation of Ukraine, which, despite the contradiction, is implementing complex reforms to integrate the country into the European community.

The Russian plan serves to fulfill the imperial ambitions of Putin (Russian President Vladimir Putin) and will lead to the destruction of the existing international order. Chaos must reign in Europe, then Moscow will calmly pursue its selfish policy.

A growing number of international analysts are pointing out how much Putin's policy now resembles Hitler's 1938 strategy, which led to the Munich Agreement, the partition of Czechoslovakia and, a year later, World War II.

If we agree to the occupation of Ukraine by Russia, we will not have to wait long for the next aggressions and claims. By defending and supporting a free Ukraine, we are defending our European home. Russia has already made free Belarus incapacitated and turned it into a testing ground for the embodiment of its own imperial ideology. This shows what can happen to us if we allow Putin to dictate his laws to us. We cannot pretend that this will not affect us.

The current situation shows that the only guarantee of security and stability in the region is Ukraine's membership in NATO and the European Union.

Actually, the heroes of the Revolution of Dignity fought for it and died for it. This is what the citizens of Ukraine demand today. This is what we are striving for in the name of peace and security in the region. We call on all countries of Europe, all the governments of the European Union and NATO states to expand the European security zone to include Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia as soon as possible. We call for real support for a free Belarus. Only this will keep the Russian imperialists from realizing their plans.

We call on governments around the world: use all means to prevent the implementation of Putin's destructive policies and preserve the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine.

Let's all - Poles, Europeans - be in solidarity with Ukraine. Let's contain Putin. Let's say a resolute "no" to the destruction of the democratic world, the principles of the inviolability of borders and the rights of citizens and states to self-determination.
