Two-time US figure skating champion committed suicide

John Kaflin was 33 of the year. He was a regular participant in figure skating competitions. In addition, the athlete traveled across the country as a coach, television commentator and a rising star in both American and international sports.

However, last December, SafeSport, which combats violence in sport, limited its ability to participate in sports activities. With what exactly it was connected, USA Today does not explain, noting, however, that the day after this became known, Coughlin resigned from his post as brand manager of a large American company producing blades for skates John Wilson Blades.

After this, SafeSport reinforced disciplinary for Coughlin to “temporary suspension” of sports activities. The United States Figure Skating Association then imposed its own punishment on a sportsman. By the organization’s decision, the skater was forbidden to participate "in any sporting activity or competition in any capacity".

This restriction, according to USA Today, should have affected Coughlin's work at the national figure skating championship in Detroit. The event will take place next week. The head of the television station, which will cover the championship, earlier, as USA Today indicates, said that Coughlin will not work as a commentator at the competitions.

SafeSport, as specified by the TV channel, was opened in 2017 year. Their goal is that representatives of the organization consider the need to “put an end to all forms of abuse in sports. In particular, SafeSport has exclusive jurisdiction over sexual misconduct, as well as combating other forms of violence. As a rule, SafeSport does not provide detailed information on the nature of the charges until the end of its own investigation, writes USA Today.

Coughlin twice became the champion of the United States - in 2011, paired with Caitlin Yankouskas and in 2012, with Cady Denny. In addition, the figure skater was the silver medalist of the championship of four continents in 2012 year.
