Donald Trump officially became a contender for the Nobel Peace Prize 2018

The US President was one of the probable candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize-2018 due to the holding of a historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore this June. Initially, relations with the leaders of the United States and the DPRK did not take shape: Donald Trump even called Kim Jong-un a “little rocketman” after testing ballistic missiles. The North Korean leader, in turn, threatened nuclear strikes on US territory.

In June 2018, Trump became the first acting US president to held talks with the DPRK leader to resolve the nuclear-missile crisis on the Korean Peninsula. After the June summit, the US president announced that Kim was an “open” and “respected” person.

The name of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize laureate will be announced at a press conference on October 5 in the Norwegian capital, Oslo. The $1,4 million award will be presented to the laureate during a ceremony on December 10.

The list of possible applicants for the award is more than 300 candidates, but Reuters writes that Trump is likely to be on the shortlist. It may also be the head of the DPRK, Kim Jong-un, South Korean President Moon Jae-In, German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, Pope Francis of Rome, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

The final short-list of candidates has not yet been published, the agency writes.

Note that Trump for the Peace Prize in June 2018 was nominated by deputies from the Norwegian Progress Party, which is part of the coalition government of the country. As it turned out later, the letters from the American, who really had the right to nominate, turned out to be fake. The Norwegian Nobel Institute found out that he did not send them, and in February of this year they reported about fakes to the Norwegian police, who requested help from the FBI. However, in May, the investigation was terminated due to lack of evidence.

According to the latest will of the Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), the peace prize, in contrast to the four other awards, established in accordance with his will, is not awarded in Stockholm, but in Oslo. The scientist pointed out that the decision to award the prize should be made by a committee of five people appointed by the Norwegian Parliament, and this tradition is still respected. At the same time, the Norwegian government emphasizes that the committee is fully independent in its decisions.

In accordance with the scientist’s will, the Peace Prize should be awarded to “the person who has achieved the greatest success or done more than others in uniting peoples and reducing the number of active armies, as well as for holding peace congresses and attracting attention to them.” However, in recent years, the more than century-old formulation has been interpreted quite broadly by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

In 2017, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) became the winner of the award.
