The confrontation is based on the annexation of Crimea by Russia (2014), the war in the Donbass (from 2014 to the present), naval incidents, cyber warfare and political tensions. Hiding its involvement in all these events, Russia has been providing military support to the separatists in Donbas since 2014. Having established a major military presence on the border since the end of 2021, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
