An American from the state of Utah is most likely infected through the tears and sweat of his dying father.

A study published in the New England Journal shows that an unusual transmission of the virus is related to the fact that the level of the virus in the body of a dying father was 100 thousands of times higher than normal.

Although the study at the University of Utah Medical School, together with ARUP Laboratories, does not answer why the virus concentration level was so high or why the son became infected in this way, he sheds light on new details about the events that led to this mysterious event.

Eight months before his death, the 8-year-old father was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He received radiation therapy and anti-androgen therapy, which may have made him less resistant to the Zika virus. But the head of infectious diseases at the University of Utah said cancer and its treatment do not explain the high concentration of the virus.

Father fell ill after a 3 weekly trip to the southwest coast of Mexico, where he was born and raised. The report does not indicate the name of the victim and where exactly he was in Mexico at the time of infection. All that is known is that in the USA he moved to 2003.

A father and other members of his family were infected during a trip from mosquito bites, carriers of the virus.

His healthy 28-year-old son contracted the virus 5 days after visiting his father at the hospital with a diagnosis of Zika. He later recovered and told the doctors that he helped the nurses take care of his father, including wiping his eyes from gloves without gloves.

At the same time, not a single nurse or doctor who was caring for his father fell ill. This also applies to other members of his family.

Health officials and researchers tested mosquitoes in the Salt Lake City area and did not find Zika virus carriers.

The authors of the new report agree with a previous assessment by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, whose microbiologists have suggested that the Zika virus may spread through tears, while previously it was believed that it is transmitted only through blood-sucking insects and sexual intercourse.
