Biden's administration wrote off $ 56 million in student debt to Americans

“Today’s announcement reaffirms the U.S. Department of Education’s commitment to protecting students whose colleges have taken advantage of them,” said Education Commissioner Miguel Cardona.

The most recent debt cancellation concerns students who attended Westwood College, Marinello Schools of Beauty and Court Reporting Institute. For the first time since 2017, the department has approved loan forgiveness for students attending institutions other than Corinthian Colleges, ITT Technical Institute, and American Career Institute.

“Today’s action continues the Biden Administration’s efforts to provide borrower protection and other targeted loan cancellation, forgiveness and repayment programs that provide relief to students,” the department said in a statement.

Borrower Defense is a federal regulation from the Department of Education that allows federal student loan borrowers to seek forgiveness of their loans if they have been defrauded by a college or university.

With an additional 1800 students, the Biden administration canceled student loans for nearly 92 people.

“The Department will continue to do its part to review and approve borrower defense applications quickly and fairly to ensure people get the help they need and deserve. We also hope that these permits will serve as a warning to any organization engaged in financial fraud that such actions will not be tolerated,” Cardona added.

Some Democrats are pushing for broader student loan forgiveness.

More than 60 Democrats sent Biden a June 23 letter urging him to extend the pause on federal student loan payments, saying the pause was a huge relief for borrowers and their families during the pandemic and "will create a serious problem."

Democrats have also previously asked Biden to provide $ 50 in student loan forgiveness for each borrower, but he said he would not, saying he would rather invest in early childhood education.
