Taxes and Student Loans: Which Laws Came into Effect in California on July 1
Another round of gas tax hikes, new student loan protections and wildfire relief are just some of several California laws taking effect July 1. Writes more about this ABC7.
Additional gasoline tax
Californians will start paying a little more for gasoline as the state tax rises another 0,6 cents.
That increases the state's gas tax to more than 51 cents per gallon, the highest in the country. The gas tax was signed into law back in 2017 and increases annually to help fund road and bridge repairs.
The tax hike will bring the state an additional $ 83 million.
Extended ban on buying more than one pistol
Other new laws taking effect include a measure that expands California's ban on purchasing more than one handgun in a 30-day period. This also includes some rifles that meet the California definition of an assault rifle.

More protection for student loan borrowers
A new large law for student loan borrowers came into force. He appoints someone to defend and investigate complaints from borrowers facing fraud or unfairness.
Outpatient mental health care
The Laura Act, a 2002 measure that allows judges to demand intensive outpatient mental health care, is becoming permanent. To participate, the individual must have a serious mental illness and a recent history of psychiatric hospitalizations, imprisonment, or violent behavior.

Closing juvenile colonies by 2023
The state has also enacted a new law that requires three of its juvenile prisons to stop accepting new inmates and close in 2023.
Fire recovery
Parts of two laws designed to help homeowners who lost property in wildfires during the state of emergency, as well as provisions to cover living expenses, also entered into force.
