The ruins of the oldest and largest city in the region have been discovered in Israel; their age is 5000 years. The ruins are located 50 kilometers from Tel Aviv. Writes about it with the BBC.
About 6 thousand people lived in the city; it is already called “New York of the Bronze Age.” There were streets, separate neighborhoods, a temple and city walls to protect the population.
Moreover, archaeologists have discovered that people lived in this place even 7000 years ago.
Israeli archaeologists say this is the most significant find of that period in history.
“This is simply Early Bronze Age New York—a cosmopolitan, well-designed city that was home to thousands of people,” the archaeologists said in a statement. “There is no doubt that this discovery will change our understanding of that era, as well as the beginning of the process of urbanization in Israel.”

The city, known as Es Esur, occupies approximately 65 hectares, which is approximately twice the size of any other known settlements of that era. The Antiquities Authority of Israel reports that streets and lanes were laid in the city, it is divided into residential and commercial quarters.
During the excavation, they found about four million fragments of jugs, tools, many of which were brought from Egypt, as well as extremely rare figurines of people and animals.
Burnt animal bones were also found at the excavation site, which suggests that sacrifices were made here.

Apparently, this area attracted people by the presence of two sources of fresh drinking water. In addition, the city was surrounded by land suitable for agriculture, and was located near the main trade routes of the region.
Excavations at this site have been going on for two and a half years. Five thousand teenagers and volunteers help archaeologists.
The ancient city was discovered by chance during the construction of a new highway. The highway route was rescheduled so as not to damage the ancient habitat.
