Where the Israelis really want to grow old
On Monday, May 3, between Passover and Holocaust Remembrance and Heroism Day, the organization Chesed Neomi published the results of a survey entitled “The rich do not want to grow old in Israel. 72% prefer to grow old abroad.”
The survey was conducted by the Rafi Smith Institute, commissioned by the organization among 500 people who are a representative statistical sample of the Jewish population of Israel.
It should be noted that “Hesed Neomi” is the largest non-profit organization in Israel that collects donations for the purpose of distributing food packages to the poor.
The report, quoted in particular by Israel's leading radio station Reshet Bet, paints a grim picture.
Only 23% of Israeli youth (30 years and under) would prefer to grow old in Israel. Among people aged 50 years and older, this figure was 38%, and among the secular population - only 13%.
Separation by income shows that among those with incomes above the national average, only 20% believe that aging in Israel is better than in other countries. Among the poor, such 55%.
However, if you look at how the only question in the survey was composed, certain doubts arise. Respondents were asked to answer the question: “Where do you think is better to grow old, in terms of socioeconomic conditions and decent living?” In this case, only three answer options were given: Western Europe (Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, etc.), the USA or Israel.
60% chose the first option, another 12% chose the second, and only 28% chose the third. However, in the subtitle of the published report it was noted that 60% chose Germany as the best place to grow old (mention of Switzerland, the Netherlands, etc. was omitted).
It should be noted that according to the international ranking of the countries with the best aging, published at the end of 2015, Israel occupies a worthy 18 place in the world, letting forward a large part of Western Europe, Japan, New Zealand and the USA, but ahead of countries such as Luxembourg, Belgium, Spain or Italy.
