Woman lost 10 family members during a devastating tornado in Alabama
Sunday was supposed to be a special day.
In recent months, 52-year-old Cora Jones has experienced a lot: a diagnosis of breast cancer, job loss and subsequent relocation. She managed to cope with everything thanks to the support of family members, many of whom lived several kilometers away from her in the small community of Beauregard.
On Sunday, Jones planned to go to church, and then come to her parents' house, prepare her mother's favorite dish - sweet potatoes. It was a great opportunity to spend an evening with the whole family, which never came true.
Shortly after the Jones family returned home from church, her parents — 83-year-old Mary and 89-year-old Jimmy Lee — died as a result of a deadly tornado that hit the eastern part of Alabama.
“When I climbed the hill, I didn’t see any houses. Everything has been demolished. I just couldn’t believe it,” Jones said. “It looked like someone took a chainsaw and walked around with it.”
First she found the body of her father. Rescuers later told her about her mother’s death.
Cora's losses did not end there. In total, 10 members of their large family, including her sibling, cousin, niece, and cousin of her mother, were killed in a tornado.
During the story of his crushing grief, Jones' eyes filled with tears.
“I won’t be able to survive this,” she said.
In addition to mother, father and brother, Jones lost other family members, including: 57-year-old Maggie Delight Robinson; Raymond Robinson, Jr., 63; 62-year-old Trescia Robinson; 38-year-old Eric Jamal Stenson; 63-year-old Florell Tate Stenson; 65-year-old Henry Lewis Stenson, 86-year-old James Tate.
The first funeral of members of the Jones family will take place on Saturday. She was hardest hit by the death of her mother, whom she wanted to see at dinner, a couple of hours before her death.
“I had no idea that this was the last time I would see my mom, and there were so many things I wanted to tell her,” Jones said, adding that she would have told her mother how much she loved her.
Recall that on Sunday, March 3, through the territory of Alabama flashed several tornadoes, killing a 23 man and injuring dozens. Fragments of houses and outbuildings were scattered everywhere.
According to the Lee County Emergency Management Agency, the most damage was caused near Beauregard.
According to local officials, the age of the victims ranged from 6 to 89 years.
