Croatian general committed suicide right at the meeting of the Hague Tribunal

Croatian Army General Slobodan Praljak 29 November committed suicide during a meeting of the International Tribunal in The Hague.

He took poison after it became known that his appeal ended with the confirmation of the previous verdict - Praljak was sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges of war crimes against Bosnian Muslims, reports “Medusa".

Slobodan Pralyak has served in the Croatian Armed Forces, as well as in the Croatian Defense Council (HOS), an armed organization of Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina. With the support of the Croatian government, the HOS participated in hostilities between the Bosnian Croats, Bosnian Serbs and the Muslim population of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Pralyak joined the HOS in 1991 and was one of the leaders in the extermination of Muslims.

In 2013, Praljak surrendered Hague Tribunal... Together with him, 5 more representatives of the military and political leadership of the Bosnian Croats did the same. Their decision was due to the fact that Croatia pressured in connection with the country's accession to the European Union.

Praljak was charged with war crimes and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia concluded that the general, as chief of staff of the KHOS, knew about the impending purges in Bosnian cities, but did not make sufficient efforts to prevent the extermination of Muslims. He was also accused of inaction in relation to the Croatian military who participated in the ethnic cleansing and destruction of mosques, as well as bridge in Mostarwhich resulted in significant civilian casualties.

On November 29, 2017, the appeal against Praljak's sentence was pending in The Hague. The International Tribunal agreed to drop some of the accusations against the Croatian general, and also acknowledged that the destroyed bridge should have been considered a military target. At the same time, the court refused to mitigate the sentence, sentencing 72-year-old Praljak to 20 years in prison.

Hearing that the verdict remained in force, the soldier committed suicide right in the courtroom. Saying into the microphone: "Praljak is not a criminal, I reject your verdict," the former soldier took out a bottle of liquid and drank it. After that, he informed those present that he had taken the poison. The meeting was interrupted, Praljak was sent to one of the Hague hospitals, where he soon died.

What kind of substance was in the bottle, and how Pralyak managed to carry it into the meeting room is still unknown. Dutch police have declared the courtroom a crime scene.
