Hillary Clinton ignored State Department recommendations on cyber security issues

According to the results of an internal audit, the US Department of State caught the presidential candidate from the Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton, and other former state secretaries of violating cybersecurity regulations.

The inspector general considered using personal e-mail to conduct official correspondence in an “inappropriate manner”, the 78-page report says.

This practice began even before Clinton was appointed Secretary of State, but it was her case that was considered the most serious. Ex-Secretary of State used a personal email account and private server to discuss business issues.

“By the time the Secretary of State took Clinton, the State Department’s prescriptions had become much more detailed and thoughtful,” the report says. “Consequently, its actions in terms of cyber security must be viewed in the light of these more comprehensive directives.”

The analysis was conducted after it became clear that Clinton used a personal e-mail at the post of state secretary. In addition, details were discovered about the various violations by the five previous state secretaries.

According to the report, former Secretary of State Colin Powell "connected the laptop to a dedicated line" and used it to send emails from his personal account to his "chief assistants, some ambassadors and foreign ministers of other countries."

It also emerged that the State Department and its leaders "were not in a hurry to recognize and comply with regulatory requirements regarding the prevention of cybersecurity risks associated with electronic communications, especially when these risks affect the most senior employees."

Meanwhile, the FBI is conducting its own parallel investigation to find out if Clinton put state secrets at risk by using personal mail.
