Obamacare contributions for 2018 will increase due to political uncertainty
Insurance companies calculate insurance premiums for 2018 year under the program Obamacare, and due to political uncertainty, most of them intend to raise prices.
This is evidenced by the results of a research organization Kaiser Family Foundationwhich compared the proposed contributions to 21 in the US state.
The researchers came to two main conclusions.
First, despite the fact that insurance premiums will significantly increase in many cities, the average growth will not be more than last year.
Secondly, the main reason for the rise in prices, insurers call the “hostile policy of the Donald Trump administration” in relation to the program Obamacare and uncertainty about her future.
In many states, insurers have stated that they have set higher prices for fear that the government will stop paying the insurance subsidies that are currently under litigation between Congress and the White House, and which Trump has repeatedly threatened to cancel.
Also, insurers fear that the Trump administration will not apply the rule provided Affordable care, that people who can afford insurance should buy it, otherwise they will be subject to tax penalties. This was another reason for raising prices.
There is no general increase in prices; some insurers have raised their premiums by 3-4%, others raised prices by 23%. The company has become a record holder in raising prices. Highmark in Wilmington, Delaware, which raised 2018 prices a year by 49%. Most companies raised their premiums to 10-20%.
The authors of the study explain this by the fact that insurers do not know how the Trump administration will act, so they “raise prices at random” to block out possible losses.
But the rise in prices is connected not only with Trump and the uncertainty of politics. This is also the traditional seasonal price increase, which insurers resort to every year. Health expenditure is expected to grow in the 2018 year, as it did every year before, so contributions are also rising.
Rising prices for medical insurance has an impact on a minority of Americans. Only about 10 million US residents buy insurance on their own, most Americans receive government subsidies that protect them from price increases. At the same time, according to experts, the number of people receiving insurance for subsidies will decrease with increasing prices.
Insurers still have time to renegotiate prices or agree on lower fees if the political situation becomes clearer. At the moment, the final prices have not yet been established.
