Trump-Putin meeting: US and Russian reaction

The first meeting between Putin and Trump lasted almost two and a half hours. The talks were also attended by the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry Sergey Lavrov and the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Trump in his confident manner said that he and the Russian leader had "very, very good negotiations," writes AP.

“We look forward to positive changes for Russia, for the United States and for all concerned,” Trump said.

Despite the fact that the White House announced the 35 minutes set aside for the meeting, the conversation dragged on for 2 hours 16 minutes, reports the State Department.

Trump did not provide any details about what issues he and the Russian leader discussed, describing them only as "different things." Putin also spoke vaguely, telling reporters through an interpreter that they were discussing international issues and bilateral issues.

“I had a very long conversation with the President of the United States. Many questions have accumulated - there are Ukraine, Syria, and other problems, some bilateral issues. We again returned to the issues of combating terrorism and cybersecurity,” Putin said following the meeting.

According to Sergey Lavrov, the leaders of Russia and the United States have agreed to create a joint communication channel to resolve the situation in Ukraine on the basis of the Minsk agreements, as well as to ensure the implementation of the cease-fire by all factions in the south-west of Syria, writes Air force.

The minister said that Trump has heard the Russian authorities’ statements about non-interference in the US elections, accepts them and believes that the campaign accusing Russia of the opposite is “strange,” writes TASS.

“President Trump, I am sure that either he himself or Rex Tillerson [US Secretary of State - approx. TASS], said that this campaign is already acquiring a rather strange character, because for many months, when these accusations have been heard, not a single fact has been presented, which is also recognized by those in the US Congress who led this movement at some stage, causing on the carpet,” Lavrov pointed out. According to the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, President Trump said that he heard clear statements from President Putin that the Russian leadership did not interfere in this election. “And he accepts these statements,” Lavrov said.

As Tillerson noted, the presidents discussed in detail the issue of Russia's possible intervention in the US presidential election.

“They discussed this issue in great detail and for a long time... The [US] President asked President Putin more than once about Russian interference [in the American elections]. President Putin denied this interference, as I think he did before,” quoted CNN Tillerson.

Welcoming his Russian colleague before the meeting, Donald Trump said that he was very glad to meet, and the negotiations in Hamburg were just the beginning of the discussion. Trump added that he looks forward to discussing a variety of issues with Putin, and hopes that the meeting will result in a positive outcome for both Russia and the United States, as well as all other parties concerned.

In the meantime, an investigation into the possible interference of Russia in the course of the presidential election in the United States continues in the United States. Russia has repeatedly denied all charges.
