Two scientists were arrested in Florida for locking their children in cages while they were at work.

Two scientists working at the University of Florida were arrested on Friday, December 8, after it was reported that they were putting their children in cages while they left for work. The publication told in more detail Fox News.

Dustin Huff, 35, and Yurui Xi, 31, are accused by the Gainesville Police Department of leaving their children at home in small cages while they were at work.

The couple showed officers the homemade cages "as if it was all normal" as they searched their property, police said.

"I'm not used to walking into a house and seeing a cage that kids are in at night and they're home alone," Gainesville Police Sergeant John Pandak said.

The couple sometimes worked at night. The cage consisted of "a large wooden fence made from pressure-treated 2x4s that appeared to be a homemade cage," the arrest report states.

One of the children told police that he sometimes had to sit in a cage from the time he came home from school until he had to leave for classes at 07:00 the next day.

The second child told the school employee that he did not want to go home because his parents would put him in a cage.

The management of the University of Florida placed the couple on administrative leave. They were charged with child abuse and neglect.

The children, 6 and 2 years old, were placed in the care of trusted relatives.
