Russian news banned in Moldova

Chairman of the Moldovan Parliament Andrian Candu approved, bypassing the head of state, the appointment of new members of the Cabinet of Ministers of the country and the law banning news broadcasts from Russia. Candu signed the law instead of President Igor Dodon, whom in early January, suspended from officewrites “Present time".

The law prohibits the transmission in Moldova of information-analytical, military or political television and radio programs in cases when they were produced in countries that have not ratified the European Convention on Transfrontier Television, for example, in Russia. Retransmission of entertainment programs or other programs from Russia to Moldova is allowed.

According to pro-Russian President Dodon, this law “represents a blatant attack on the freedom of citizens in Moldova.”

Therefore, in response to the adoption of the law, Dodon threatened to take people to the streets with protests.

“The Presidential Institute reserves the right to call for the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of citizens to stop constitutional violations and lawlessness. Pray to get this blow in the parliamentary elections, and not before that,” Dodon wrote on his page on the social network Facebook.

The oppositional Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova has already announced support for the president.

Before this, Dodon twice rejected the law on combating “foreign propaganda”, despite the fact that according to the Constitution, the president, despite disagreement, is obliged to approve the document if parliament passes it twice. As a result, the Constitutional Court of Moldova temporarily removed the president from office and gave the Speaker of the Canadian Parliament the right to sign the law.

Similar procedures in Moldova have already been applied previously. In October, the Constitutional Court allowed Canda instead of the President to sign a decree appointing Yevgeny Sturz as Minister of Defense in October, and on January 2017 allowed NN to appoint the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and six other members of the government bypassing Dodon.
