Visitors to popular places in Southern California could get measles
A teenage girl infected with the measles virus recently visited Disneyland and other popular tourist attractions in Southern California, putting countless others at risk - measles is airborne and is contagious in 90% of cases, health officials say.
The girl flew to America from New Zealand and was in California from 11 to 15 on August, according to the Orange County Health Agency. The department warned that it was trying to find people who could become infected with the virus, or those who already had symptoms, writes Huffington Post.
“For unprotected people, measles is a highly contagious and potentially severe illness that initially causes fever, cough, redness, watery eyes and eventually a rash,” said Los Angeles County Medical Director Dr. Muntu Davis. “Measles spreads through the air and through direct contact even before you know it.”

Places that the girl visited included Los Angeles International Airport, Desert Palms Hotel, Disney California Adventure Park, Universal Studios, TCL Chinese Theater, Madame Tussauds Museum and Pier, and Santa Monica Beach.
Measles is one of the most contagious viruses in the world. About 90% of people who have not been immunized become ill within 7 – 21 days after infection. According to health officials, the virus can live up to two hours in midair, where an infected person coughed or sneezed.
The infected girl’s visit to California happened amid the largest measles outbreak in the country in 27 years. As of August 15 in 30 states, 1203 individual cases have been confirmed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, of these individuals, 124 were hospitalized, and 64 others reported complications associated with the virus.

In 2000, the virus was declared annihilated in the United States, but an increase in the number of unvaccinated people and entire communities, as well as the number of travelers infected with measles abroad and delivering it to the United States, led to the resumption of outbreaks, mainly in New York.
“Most likely, measles will continue to spread and cause outbreaks in US communities where groups of people are not vaccinated,” the CDC website says.
