Israeli stewardess died of measles: she became ill on a flight from New York

43-year-old flight attendant of Israel’s leading airline El Al, who felt unwell during the flight, died of measles in a hospital five months after exposure to the virus. Writes about it Rtvi.

In an official statement, the company said that immediately after the news about the flight attendant’s illness, a campaign was launched to vaccinate employees. The airline also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.

It is noted that the stewardess felt ill on a flight from New York to Tel Aviv in April 2019. After returning to Israel, she was hospitalized, and then she fell into a coma.

Soon, doctors found a stewardess brain damage. The woman was transferred to a hospital in Raanan, where many rehabilitation specialists work. The stewardess’s condition did not improve; she was transferred to the Beilinson hospital in Petah Tikva.

The woman received only one measles vaccine, instead of the recommended two. If you do not get revaccinated, the probability of getting sick is a few percentage points higher.

Measles is a contagious disease that killed 2017 thousand people in 110. At the same time, the mortality from the disease over 17 years was reduced by 80%: in 2000, 545 thousand died from it. The World Health Organization (WHO) links this to the vaccination campaign and the advent of more affordable vaccination.

Despite the efforts of WHO, in the 2018 and 2019 years there has been an increase in the incidence of measles, not only in African and Asian, but also in the European and American regions. In the first half of the 2019 year, more people fell ill with it than in the entire 2018 year.
