A large balcony collapsed at a party in South Korea celebrating the US women's aquatics team's victory at the World Championships, killing two people and injuring dozens.

The second floor of the club Coyote Ugly, along with the balcony and the stairs collapsed around 2: 40 in the morning local time on Saturday, July 27, writes New York Post. It is estimated that at the time of the incident there were about 370 people in the club.

In addition to the American athletes, members of the New Zealand men's and women's water polo teams were present at the celebration. Matt Small, the team captain, said: "There was no sign of trouble, and then the balcony literally collapsed under our feet."

Athletes participated in the World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju. The accident occurred in a nightclub, adjacent to the sports village.

FINA, the international governing body for water sports, said it was "carefully monitoring the situation." The owner of the club was arrested and is under investigation.

According to RBC, as a result of the incident, according to firefighters, two citizens of South Korea were killed, more than ten more (according to various sources, from 16 to 20) people from different countries also suffered.

Authorities confirmed injuries to nine athletes - four Americans, two New Zealanders, a Dutchman, an Italian, and a Brazilian. All but the Brazilian are water polo players, among them six are women. In addition, two citizens of Uzbekistan who are not related to the sports world championship suffered. According to firefighters, we are talking about serious injuries, but some needed the help of doctors.

27-year-old Kaylee Gilchrist and three other US water polo players were among those affected by the collapse. The girl who won the gold medal in water polo during the Olympics in Rio, underwent surgery because of a deep cut on her leg.

Other Americans, Paige Hauschild and Johnny Hooper, suffered lacerations that required stitches, while Ben Hallock suffered "minor scrapes to his legs."

“This is a terrible tragedy,” said Christopher Ramsey, CEO of USA Water Polo.
